Chris Houseman, who has died suddenly aged 70, was a significant figure on Yorkshire's cricket scene, being chairman of York Cricket Club and a former president the Yorkshire Cricket League.
Born in York, Chris went to Clifton Without and Scarcroft junior schools before going to Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School in York where he played rugby and cricket at first team level, in addition to being head boy.
He did two years National Service in the Royal Air Force, spending part of his time learning Russian at Crail, near St Andrews in Scotland.
He then went to Berlin to join a group of linguists eavesdropping on the Soviet Union air force's operational plans in East Germany and Poland.
That was all highly secret at the time.
Later he was heard to say, with a smile: "I don't think the course of history was changed by my efforts."
Returning to civilian life, Chris spent four years at Oxford University before getting a job with Shell-Mex and BP in the autumn of 1962.
Six years in London followed, and he played cricket and rugby at Lensbury, the oil company's sports club on the banks of the Thames.
In 1970, he moved to Leeds, and to Edinburgh four years later. There he took up rugby refereeing and captained the Grange Cricket Club.
He spent the years between 1977 and 1984 back in London, and then three years in Holland, before ending his working life in London.
By then he held the highly-responsible position of oil trading manager for BP – the split from Shell-Mex had come in 1976 and these later years took him to Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar and the United States.
Within six months of moving back to York after retiring, he was installed as chairman of York CC, a position he held until the time of his death.
He continued to play cricket for York and for York Wanderers until well into his 60’s, and had the distinction of hitting an unbeaten century while playing for York's fourth team in a York Vale League match.
But it was his phenomenal off-the-field activities which made him, such an important figure at Clifton Park, the home of York Cricket, Rugby Union, Tennis and Squash clubs.
In addition to his work as chairman, Chris spent many hours at the club, being involved in team selection, junior coaching, umpiring, helping the ground staff, fund raising, and he was also a leading figure in organising the club's annual sportsman's dinner.
When he became President of Yorkshire Cricket League, he instigated a number of improvements to the organisation.
